Soaring Eagle Cycling Routes Proposal

Cyclists - Your Input is Request

A few months ago, the British Columbia Cycling Coalition (BCCC) approached the BC Government and proposed a provincial-wide network of cycling routes aimed at encouraging touring cycling within the province. BC’s Soaring Eagle Cycling Routes has been the working title for this proposal by the BCCC. (presentation)

BCCC’s proposal was inspired by Québec’s very successful provincial-wide touring cycling network called “La Route Verte” (http://www.routeverte.com/rv/ang/ ). With such spectacular scenery, why does this province not have such capabilities for touring cycling?

The province has shown interest in the concept and has asked the BCCC to propose routes in three areas within the province:

1. Circular routes within the wine country of Kelowna from Vernon on the north side and Osoyoos at the south end.
2. Circular routes on the Southern parts of Vancouver Island from Nanaimo south to the Strait of Juan de Fuca, including the Gulf Islands.
3. From the Georgia Strait through Metro Vancouver up the Fraser Valley to Hope.

Airports, ferry terminals and other ports of entry to the province should be connected to the Routes.

The Cycling Routes should be appealing to touring cyclists of all skills capabilities, personal effort expenditure, and confidence with cycling on roads. People should be enticed by the network and drawn to cycling for their next outing. The Routes should be conducive for increasing participation with physical activities within our life.

The Routes should be appealing to:

• Out of Province (i.e., rest of Canada and international) Cyclists

o Cycling tourists who may plan trips varying in length from a few days to a month or more.
o Vacationing travelers in transit though Vancouver and other BC airport who could be enticed to stop and stay over for exploring parts of the province by bicycle.
o Business travelers who could also be enticed to stop and stay over for exploring by bicycle parts of the province or the region where they are visiting.

• British Columbia Cyclists

o Day wanderers – Local cyclists who live close to the Cycling Routes and go out for a day ride.
o Weekend explores – Cyclists from BC who want to explore other regions within the Province.

The work has started with gathering input for interesting routes from some touring cyclists. Now, you are being called on for your suggestions for these three areas.

Your input before February 29 would be much appreciated.

Please provide us with:

1. Your favourite routes both on –road and off-road, suitable for touring cycling.
2. Off-road paths or trails you feel should be developed. These may be along abandoned or operational rail lines or parallel to your suggested road routes.
3. Comments on routes suggested by others.

For these, we would appreciate information and your comments on:

1. Road surface (asphalt, gravel, paved shoulders, cycling facilities, etc.)
2. General elevation profile for the routes and also any sections with steep hills or other sections which cyclists should be aware of.
3. Interesting places worthwhile to visit along or close by the routes or interesting nature in the area to observe.
4. Parts of routes which are more demanding and may appeal to better conditioned cyclists.

Please visit each of the maps for the three areas of interest and provide your input. If you have an electronic map marked with your favourite route, please do not hesitate to send it along to us.
